Good news for cervical cancer prevention in Europe!
The European Union has just released its long-awaited guidelines on cervical cancer screening and diagnosis.
- Cytology-based screening is now recommended against. It may delay access to HPV testing and is considered worse than no screening at all.
- Screening under age 30 is only advised if there is effective triage (e.g. extended HPV genotyping).
- Screening above age 64 is not needed IF the woman has previously had HPV testing.
This is a milestone in evidence-based policy and a major win for public health and cancer prevention across the EU.
Let’s make sure these recommendations translate into action!
